Sixteen H-shaped extrustions (14 TZM and 2 stainless) were made with new support tooling. No failure or distortion occurred in the tooling, regardless of liner pressure up to 237,000 psi. Reasonable quality and dimensional runout were found in TZM extrusions at a reduction ratio of 43:1 from 3200F billet temperature with the use of flame-sprayed zirconia dies. Similar extrusions from 3350F were poor. The use of pressed and sintered solid zirconia nibs was demonstrated successfully for the...

Calculations were performed to determine the efficiency of integral bow and stern propellers for a body of revolution. Such a propulsion system leads to propellers with large hubs relative to the tip diameter and a large number of blades. The calculations were carried out for a propeller with 13 blades with various tip diameters, blade areas, and rpm's. The series results are presented, analyzed, and applied to computing the propulsion performance of a hypothetical 250-foot tandem propeller...

Susceptibility to stress-corrosion failure was found in all 18%- nickel alloy heats having yield strengths from 181.5 to 232.2 ksi. Susceptibility became greater with increasing titanium content and yield strength. At a given strength level, 18%-nickel maraging steel was less susceptible to failure than was H-11 steel or a hotworked die steel. Cold working of 18%-nickel maraging steel before aging further reduced its susceptibility to stress-corrosion failure. Distilled water was a more severe...

Tensile properties of high purity powder metallurgy tungsten and W-1% ThO2 alloy were determined at various strain rates and temperatures (800-2400 C). 1% ThO2 imparts a slight overall increase in strength properties, although above 0.5 T sub m these properties are affected by void formation. The tensile properties of pure W and W-O.35% Ta single crystals (worked, and worked and recrystallized) investigated from R.T. to 1200C are shown to be affected by C, particularly in the quenched...

In a study of the influence of the host on characteristics of Venezuelan equine encephalitis (VEE) virus, it was observed that virus populations propagated in the chick embryo, mouse brain, or monolayers of L cells differ in the following characteristics depending upon the host: (a) banding patterns in sucrose gradients, (b) ratio of soluble to insoluble lipids (in petroleum ether), and (c) size of plaques formed by both crude and purified virus when assayed in chick fibroblast monolayers. The amino acid composition of purified staphylococcal enterotoxin B was determined by means of an automatic amino acid analyzer. All of the naturally occurring amino acids were found with no indication of any unusual amino acids. Extraordinarily high values of aspartic acid, glutamic acid and lysine were found, but a high amide nitrogen accounted for the alkaline isoelectric point. Isoionic protein with a pH of 8.55 was prepared by passing the toxin through a mixed bed ion exchange column....

This study is an investigation of crash-resistant design principles for integral fuel tanks. The objective was to improve fuel containment as a means of minimizing or eliminating post-crash fires during severe but survivable accidents. Aircraft types studied were multi-engine transports. Analytical studies indicate relative strengths, weights and costs for various tank configurations subjected to concentrated impact, distributed impact and fuel inertial loadings. Results of full-scale tank...

Photoemission measurements have been made on single crystals of cadmium sulfide which were cleaved and tested in high vacuum at photon energies between 7.2 and 11.6 eV. The electron affinity is found to be 4.8 eV. Additional measurements have been made in an extended range from 6 to 21.2 eV using surfaces cleaved in air or in low vacuum and tested in low vacuum. The apparatus for cleaving and measuring photoemission is described. Important features of the band structure are deduced from the...

A laboratory study was conducted to investigate several methods of measurement applicable to determining the thermal expansion and contraction of bituminous concrete. The primary objective was to select the test methods which would measure most adequately thermal expansion and contraction. Both linear as well as volumetric techniques were investigated over the temperature range of - 30 to 40C. Three volumetric and three linear techniques were investigated in the course of this investigation.

The study examines in detail those portions of laser systems that could bear on their use in support of Air Force communication requirements. To properly evaluate their potential application for a number of communication applications, a considerable amount of detail has been included concerning the various components of laser communication links. In many potential applications, lasers are attractive but they require additional development and somewhat complicated component design to counteract...

Reflectance measurements were made at different azimuth and colatitude angles relative to flat samples of the aluminum and white epoxy paint surfaces used on the Explorer Ix satellite by means of an adapted monoplanar goniophotometer. Contour charts of the reflectance from these samples were obtained from the results of these measurements. Reflectance relative to mutually perpendicular axes was obtained by graphical integration of the contour charts. The vectorial summation of the reflectance...

Technical and economic data were developed in three categories: heat sinks, miscellaneous cooling-system components, and refrigeration and dehumidification devices. Various combinations were considered as assembled into cooling systems and these systems were then evaluated with respect to their cost effectiveness in removing excess shelter heat. The reaction of nitrogen pentoxide and chlorinetrifluoride did not result in the desired C14F2(+)NO3(-). The main product isolated was nitrylfluoride. The small amount of residue obtained did not contain chlorine in any valency state. When chlorinetrifluoride reacted with fuming nitric acid again no C1F2(+)NO3(-) could be detected. A solid residue of low thermal stability was obtained, which also did not contain any chlorine. In the vapor phase the presence of C102F was established. The...

This thesis develops unbiased single order statistic and m-order- statistic estimators of the scale parameter of a truncated lognormal probability density function. In this development it is assumed that the location parameter is known and that if it is not zero, a transformed variable with a location parameter approximately zero can be obtained. The method of development of the singleorder-statistic estimator was to consider the expected value of the i-th order statistic. The development of...

Conclusions: Antirenal antibodies exhibit selective localization in a homologous organ and are located in lesser amounts in heterologous organs. The maximum in localization of antirenal antibodies has been noted in renal glomeruli, especially in capillary bundles of glomeruli. In heterologous organs antibodies are generally localized about blood vessels and capillaries. Antihepatic antibodies do not manifest this selective localization, distributing more or less uniformly throughout all organs.

The vertical accelerations involved in crouching and returning to the erect position were computed from the measured forces applied by the subject's feet to a force plate. The subjects were simply instructed to squat, retrieve an object from the floor and return to the erect position in a normal manner. The average peak accelerations were found to range from 0.118 to 0.166 G. If an astronaut's acceleration pattern is the same under weightlessness, a restraint system or device capable of holding...
